Abstract

The article examines Karakalpak folk songs as a unity of genre function, poetic form, melody and performance. Drawing on published song collections, folklore scholarship and musicological studies, it proposes a four-part analytical model: text, melody, performance situation and collective memory. Ritual, lyrical, historical, labour and satirical songs are discussed in relation to both subject matter and social purpose.
