Abstract

This article discusses the foundation of traditional Karakalpak music, which is monody. It
is characterized by the oral nature of existence (transmitted from mentor to student over centuries) and
variability. It manifests in two main forms: as an integral part of oral folk poetic creativity and as an
independent art form. The vocal principle prevails. Instrumental performance is developed on national
musical instruments such as the kobyz, dutar, girjek, shinkobyz (which is widely used among women), nay,
balaman, and others, but it has not acquired the independent significance observed in Uzbek and Tajik
musical culture.
